Oktoberfest

A lively German celebration Oktoberfest is making its way back to Southern California this spring, and the best part?

It’s less than a three-hour drive from San Diego.

While it may not be as large as Oktoberfest, the Annual Big Bear Lake Maifest promises all the charm and excitement with its own spring twist.

Set for May, this vibrant festival bids farewell to winter and welcomes warmer days at the picturesque Big Bear Lake.

Now in its seventh year, Maifest offers a blend of traditional German music, authentic maibock beers, sizzling bratwursts, and much more.

This celebration captures the same gemütlichkeit ambiance as Oktoberfest, with a refreshing spring vibe.

“While we love the snow, there comes a time when we need to reboot and embrace the new season,” said Maifest Director Monica Marini.

“Maifest is full of festive colors and fun traditions in the open mountain air — it’s the perfect cure for cabin fever!”

The festival, rooted in German history dating back to the 18th century, originally celebrated the end of winter and the arrival of spring with classic Oktoberfest-style festivities.

Today, Southern California’s Maifest keeps those traditions alive, featuring some of the region’s top German-style bands. Performers include the all-female group Ladyhosen, known for their blend of polka and classic tunes, led by Bavarian yodeler Kathrin Jacob.

The lederhosen-clad band Die Sauerkrauts will also perform, offering a dynamic mix of traditional German music alongside pop, rock, and funk.

Festivalgoers are encouraged to don traditional German attire, such as lederhosen or dirndls, to fully immerse themselves in the experience.

The festivities kick off on Saturday, May 18, with additional dates on Saturday, May 25, and Sunday, May 26, over Memorial Day weekend.

For added convenience, a complimentary shuttle service will be available, offering free rides to and from the event. San Diegans eager for a taste of Germany don’t have to wait until Oktoberfest — Maifest at Big Bear Lake will bring the mountains alive with bratwursts, apple strudels, and log-sawing competitions this spring!
